Here is an interesting info from InfoQ: VMware Has Launched vSphere, the OS of the Cloud.
The concept they are focused on is the internal or private cloud:
You can take a relatively small configuration of servers, just a few servers, and put those on a scheduled maintenance basis, install everything, and if something breaks you don’t call somebody right away, you wait for your weekly or monthly visit and they will come in and replace it, because our software will self heal and keep running.
We still don’t manage datacenters effectively, we surely struggle with virtualization … is the private cloud the solution? Tell me what you think!

I have mixed feelings about private clouds.
Usually is it how it goes:
– you explain to someone that public clouds are cool…and maybe cost effective
– they say “cool”
– than, they look back at their internal IT data center and its x hundred machines already there…bought with their budget.
– and they ask: can we make something similar with those machines? Better resource sharing…turning on virtual pre-production machines only when needed…
And then, in a free market, we have demand driving offering, and in a few months private clouds are born 🙂
I expect public clouds to be common in a few years… but now there is space for private clouds, even if I feel them a defensive choice.
There is also a good debate space if we look at privacy and data sensibility.
