While I slightly agree with the first part of the quote, because you don’t want to intimidate anybody, especially in a blame/fear setup, I find the second one totally dumb and quite patronizing.
You can and you will learn a lot even if you are the most brilliant person on the planet. Learning is about differences (point of views, background, associations of thoughts, etc.), not about looking smart. So, I’m not enouraging it, but you can be an arrogant ass and if you are conscious about it you can still learn a lot. It’s up to you.
That’s the problem with some citations: even though they are quite attractive, they just don’t fit, there’s always something slipping through the cracks…

you are right … and as any quote I like the ‘power’ of the concept instead of analyzing the meaning of any punctuation mark.
